Employee share plan a victory, unions say“Workers stand to gain most from empowerment deals under mooted scheme”.

At pay talks on 10th July for the metals and engineering industry, employers agreed to prioritise employee share ownership plans (Esops) as an industry empowerment option. The request to favour employees in empowerment equity deals, as required by the government’s broad-based empowerment code, was tabled by the National Union of Metal Workers of SA (Numsa) and Solidarity.
The employer body, Seifsa, agreed yesterday to table a proposal at the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac), which would incentivise Esops as an option in empowerment deals.
